Creating a digital product is not simply about having a brilliant idea and then rushing into building the product.
If you want the product to be more than a one-night sensation, you need to take the time to answer some key questions.
So, let’s dive into three questions that will set you on the path toward digital success.

1. What Problem Are You Trying to Solve?
The answer to this question seems obvious when you read through it, but you would not believe how many startups do not ask themselves this simple question.
Even though you are enthusiastic about getting your new product out there, I implore you to stand in the mirror and ask yourself, “What problem am I solving for the user?”
Without a clear problem statement, your new product may be useless.
The issue is that the solution you thought was the right idea may not solve the exact problem the users are facing. So, solve their problems rather than worrying about your ‘good’ idea.
Ask yourself:
- Why am I creating this product?
- What specific problem does it address for the user?
- How will it improve their daily lives?
The most important thing is to solve the most pressing issue.
Focusing on the right problem can mean the difference between a product that users remember to use and one they forget almost immediately.
2. What Business Goals Are You Trying to Achieve?
Every company has its mission, be it making a profit, saving the world, or both. Your digital product needs to address that goal.
If it doesn’t, you’ll find yourself trying to sell ice to Eskimos – yes, it is possible, but it’s not the best choice.
Consider how the product aligns with a higher purpose within your business.
- Does this enhance your value proposition?
- Does it drive revenue or customer satisfaction?
If this is something that really isn’t going to impact your business, then maybe it is time to reassess.
Hit the sweet spot where your business goals and user needs meet. This will let you create a product that is not only valuable but also creates value for both users and your company.
3. How Will You Measure Your Success?
Finally, the metrics: how will you know whether you have a base hit or an out-of-the-park with your digital product?
You need clear, measurable goals. This includes setting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that inform you about how far up the ladder you have progressed.
KPIs are to your product what a report card is to school. This is the report card that will let you know if you’re completely nailing it or if you need to go back to that old drawing board.
Across the board, from reducing customer support requests to getting more subscription renewals and speeding up service delivery, your KPIs must be specific and measurable but pointed directly toward your goals.
Ask yourself:
- How will I measure if I’ve solved the user’s problem?
- What metrics will show that we’re meeting our business goals?
Create Clarity within Your Digital Products
An effective digital product does not originate from a great idea but from the right questions. It’s the strategies, basically, that keep a company on the right track.
With these three questions, you will be better empowered to create products that meet real needs, align with your goals, and bring clear success.
First and foremost, curiosity and a deep understanding of the needs of users pave the way toward digital success.
So, the next time you have an idea that may be your next big thing, take a step back and ask the right questions. Your future self—and your users—will thank you.
