We certainly hear the word “mentor” often enough nowadays. With so many gurus online promoting their mentor services it’s hard to differentiate the real mentors from the fakes. This reason, amongst many others, have driven many people away from the idea of finding a mentor.

If you’ve been turned off from the idea of finding a mentor you should sit back and reconsider the reasons why you’ve made this decision. Having a mentor is a lot like getting a head start in a race — you gain an advantage. In some cases, you gain a major advantage.

LAZINESSS & PROCRASTINATION

Laziness and procrastination are the two biggest dream killers. We want  to go to the gym, but we decide tomorrow is better. We want to grow our blogs, but we decide to hold off on writing compelling content until we’re in the right “creative mode.” We want to find the man or woman of our dreams, but we’re too scared to put ourselves out there.

Over time we get tired and beat up because we keep setting goals, yet we never accomplish them. That’s when most people quit because they’re simply too fed up. Having a mentor in your life can help you overcome this type of mindset. Think of your mentor as a coach, the type that keeps pushing you until you think you’ve reached your limits. Then they keep pushing you, and suddenly you’ve accomplished more than you ever thought possible.

ARE YOU WILLING TO LEARN?

There aren’t many people who come to mind who have achieved success in their lives that didn’t have a mentor of some kind to help propel them forward. For example, Socrates was the mentor of Plato and Plato was the mentor of Aristotle. These were the greatest Greek philosophers of their time. Even Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, had a mentor — the late Steve Jobs!

If you’re unwilling to acknowledge your weakness and identify where you’re falling short, then it will be difficult for you to be mentored successfully. People who are close minded and believe they can do everything on their own are simply not vulnerable enough to allow someone else to come into their lives and tell them what they’re doing wrong.

Therefore, you have to defeat the mindset that you know it all because you simply don’t. Leveraging the skill and experience of a mentor will allow you to surpass your own limitations and unlock your latent potential.

If you’re wondering if you need a mentor the answer is absolutely yes. Even if you’re doing well, you could always learn more from someone more successful than yourself. Always be coachable. Always be willing to learn and grow. That’s how success is defined and that’s how you can make the most of any mentorship.
