When you think about being a real estate investor, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? If it’s someone who purchases physical properties as a means of investment, you’re only partly correct. In fact, real estate investors have many strategies at their disposal when looking to generate long-term wealth and over the past 60 years or so, business has been booming.

In this article I’ll discuss exactly what it means to be a real estate investor and how you can become one yourself. I’ll also touch on some of the various investments you can make once you decide to take the leap in the world of real estate.

First, Let’s Define ‘Real Estate Investor’

As you can probably deduce from the name, real estate investors invest money in property. Essentially, they’re risk takers who assess the real estate market to produce sustained wealth. Investors in real estate profit from purchasing and selling properties, manipulating their value with renovations and upgrades, collecting rents, and lobbying politicians and governmental land use agencies like the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Real estate investors can work with a partner, agencies, real estate investing networks, or they can be solo entrepreneurs. If you have the experience and know how, you can even consult others on how to manage their real estate portfolio or advise them on real estate investment strategies.

As a real estate investor in 2023, your main concern is inflation and deflation in the value of land and property. To succeed in real estate investing requires drive, patience, great money-management skills, and local real estate knowledge to turn a substantial profit.

How Can I Become A Real Estate Investor?

One of the best things about deciding to pursue a career as a real estate investor is that you don’t need a fancy degree or any other education requirements to start or be successful. The only must haves are access to adequate start-up capital and a go-getter attitude.

To ultimately succeed at real estate investing, you need to have a fundamental understanding of the real estate market and current local trends. Real estate investors have to be able to determine whether or not a property is worth investing in based on local market conditions and housing prices.

Of course, when you’re first starting out, it’s impossible for you to know everything; educating yourself or seeking out a real estate investor mentor can go a long way.
